I've come to the conclusion that the Canon 70-300mm USM IS lens I was using to take this photo is not the best choice for shooting birds.
I was taking a photo of a aircraft (at the Dryden airport) when this bird hopped towards me. Skittish little thing as it was, I was able to get a few shots. It was only about 8-10 feet away.
